The three states are manifestations of consciousness, but are unreal, in the sense, that it is not absolute and eternal like consciousness itself.+

Chandogya Upanishad - One who meditates upon and realizes the 'Self' discovers that everything in the cosmos-- energy and space, fire and water, name and form, birth and death, mind and will, word and deed, mantram and meditation--all come from the Self.
The three states are manifestations of consciousness, but are unreal, in the sense, that it is not absolute and eternal like consciousness itself.
People's approach is more practical, and they stuck with the reality of the three states, they take it as real. That is why all the confusion.
A person, who stamped his foot on the ground to refute to show the world, is real, ignores that in the dream he would do exactly the same--stamp his dream foot on the ground and assert it to be real.
Deeper self-search helps the seeker to discover and realize that the dual (waking or dream) and nondual (deep sleep) experiences are merely an illusion.
Self-knowledge or Brahma Gnana or Atma Gnana helps the seeker to transcend into the indivisible consciousness, which is beyond form, time, and space.
People who are stuck to the reality of the world will not be able to realize the world in which they exist is merely an illusion.
The universe in which we exist is present only in waking experience. The waking experience (duality) appears and disappears as deep sleep (nonduality).
In reality, the three states are one in essence. That essence is the Soul, which is present in the form of consciousness.
Consciousness is the formless substance of the universe.
Consciousness is the formless witness of the universe.
Consciousness is also the source of the universe. Thus, the whole universe in which we exist is nothing but consciousness.
It is impossible to judge the truth, which is beyond the form, time, and space, on the base of the birth entity, because the birth entity is not the Self.
The Self is the Soul, which is birthless and deathless because it is ever formless, timeless, and spaceless.

If one wants to realize the truth beyond form, time, and space, then he has learned to view, judge, and reason on the base of the formless and invisible Soul, the Self. : ~ Santthosh Kumaar
